>>> thanks for joining us for the news at noon. i'm mike hydek for jc today. a masked gunman tried to rob five people this morning on jefferson street and continued blocks away from the white house. investigators are pouring over three crime scenes. we have the latest from the crime scene. >> reporter: it happened before dawn. south of dupont circle. on 18th and jefferson. police say five people were robbed. money and cell phones taken. in an area populated with restaurants and bars. people who work the early shift here are surprised. >> it is a lot for the city. but this area is always okay. i mean there is always a lot of police around all the time because of the clubs. i don't know how someone would be bold enough to try to rob anybody at that time in the morning. >> police say they were last seen on 19th and k. before the area was busy this morning. at that time they sent out a tweet looking for several people in a white or silver lincoln. apparently, they were armed. >> at some point, some of the victims were leaving and the suspects were in a vehicle, and one of the suspects

who earn more than $250,000 a year? >> well that certainly is what the exit polls showed us. there was support for those polled for the president's position. the president has had lots of support for that position going back months and months. after the 2010 congressional elections when they won in that wave election that's still where the public was. having a public behind him has not helped the president in previous negotiations. of course, things have changed now. >> what do you think the mood is for compromise now? we've listened to speaker boehner. the president will make his case today. is there generally a mood that enough of this dysfunction, let's get things done and let's compromise, as long as we don't cross over our principles? >> yeah. i think there is a mood for compromise. the question is -- it will be interesting to watch the theater here. in 2010 during the lame duck period after the election there was -- they got some work done. and what -- for negotiation to work, both sides will probably start very far away. the question is will each

night, the american people voted for action, not politics as usual. you elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours. and in that spirit, i've invited leaders of both parties to the white house next week so we can start to build consensus around the challenges that we can only solve together. last year, i worked with democrats and republicans to cut a trillion dollars worth of spending that we just couldn't afford. i intend to work with both parties to do more, and that includes making reforms that will bring down the cost of health care so we can strengthen programs like medicaid and medicare for the long haul. i've put forward a detailed plan that allows us to make these investments, while reducing our deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade. i want to be clear-- i'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. i'm open to compromise. i'm open to new ideas. i'm committed to solving our fiscal challenges. but i refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced. i am not going to ask students and seniors and middle-class families to pay down the entire deficit while people like me making ove
tax cuts, even to what you call the wealthy? >> yes. the reason is we can't afford it. it will cost us a trillion dlz. >> last night john boehner laid out his opening offer. >> i've made it clear to the president and i think i laid out yesterday that raising taxes on small businesspeople is the wrong prescription given where our economy is. raising tax rates is unacceptable and, frankly, it couldn't even pass the house. i'm not sure it could pass the senate. >> he youed an important word though, raising tax rates. apparently he is open to some tax increases in it comes in the form of increased revenue. in many ways they are simply starting where they left off a year ago and debt ceiling federal governme negotiations. the question is how many house republicans is boehner willing to lose? the white house believes that after the election they have a stronger hand. after not just winning re-election but increasing their senate majority. on thursday, boehner did sound a lot more conciliatory. >> i remain optimistic that we're going to be able to find common ground. tim most reasonable, resp
